Ash “I have broken this article up into two piece of work for the simple reason of distinction. Media access played an important role in my experience of Luftgekühlt as I got a chance to view over two hundred air cooled Porsches in relative peace before the main crowd entered at midday.”

Air cooled Porsches was the brief and the participants did not disappoint, cars from all over the world along with Japan’s very own immaculate collection were all out on display on a closed portion of the KK Line Expressway in Ginza which itself created a unique and visually challenging backdrop.

Big hitters like RUF, Singer and Guntherwerks had some incredible examples of their modern interpretation of the classic silhouette, while some classic Porsche race cars stole the show at the opposite end of the expressway. While the background drew your immediate realization of just how amazingly unique this event is, it was the presentation of the cars and their position within the framing of the Ginza backdrop that made most stop and stare for a brief second before aiming the camera. I genuinely loved the box framing of certain special Porsches as it highlighted their prestige without interfering with the overall minimal theme, such an example would be the number 28 Porsche 910 which finished first in its class and second overall in the 1968 Japanese Grand Prix, or the beautiful 1984 Porsche 956 that dominated endurance racing. These cars framed and elevated with the Ginza bustle behind them made for a visceral experience that I believe many will remember for years to come.

While I explored everything meticulously for two hours I noticed it started to fill with ticket holders, and such, part two comes into its own with the new challenge of capturing the amazing experience in between the 11,000 people now swarming through the expressway.
